Our History

Breaking Ground

Our founder, Don Rasmussen, breaks ground on December 6, 1971, and begins operations out of a small shop in Portland, Oregon.

Growth on the Horizon

The factory operations relocate to a larger facility in Tualatin, Oregon. The company adopts new construction procedures to make their construction more efficient.

Establishing Leadership

Modern joins the Modular Building Institute, an association with a mission to expand the use of off-site construction through innovation, outreach, education, and recognition. Since joining, Modern has received several awards and was recognized as a leader in off-site construction.

Second Generation

The second generation of Modern starts when Don’s sons Jim and Ken join Modern. (Both became minority owners in 1989.)

Making Moves

Modern moves to a new 32-acre property in Aumsville, Oregon. This facility is Modern’s current headquarters.

The Next Generation

Jim Rasmussen becomes President and Ken Rasmussen becomes Chairman of Modern.

The Torch is Passed

Don Rasmussen retires from Modern. Ownership of the company is passed down to his two sons, Jim and Ken, who become 50/50 owners. Jim remains active in the day-to-day operations of the company today and is the majority owner.

The Expansion

In order to facilitate building transportation between states, a new 124,020 sq. ft. branch is open in Pacific, Washington.

The Beginning

After over 30 years advocating for modular construction, Don Rasmussen is inducted into the prestigious Modular Building Institute’s Hall of Fame.

Further Expansion

Modern continues to expand its business by constructing an additional branch in West Sacramento, California.

Becoming More Environmentally Conscious

Modern becomes EarthWISE certified and is recognized for its environmentally friendly practices in the workspace.

Modern Goes Solar

In 2019, Modern invests considerable money to install a 180-megawatt power system on the roof of the production facility.

Generation Three

Ken Rasmussen retires from Modern. His son, Alan, and nephew, Ryan become minority owners.
