Due to increased enrollment, Lake Washington School District turned to modular buildings to provide classroom space at four different Elementary sites. Lake Washington tasked Modern Building Systems with providing a building that was more energy efficient, used materials with high recycle content, have a look of a permanent building, and give the students a better leaning environment. With these criteria in mind Modern provided their second generation of SMART classroom. The SMART classroom includes a steel framed floor allowing the building to be installed directly on the concrete footings providing the building with a finish height similar to the permanent buildings on site. Green building products included steel roofing; cement siding, Forbo wall panels, and thermally broken aluminum windows. Efficient LED pendant lights were used to provide energy savings to the school district. The SMART classroom includes large windows to provide natural lighting, vaulted ceilings to enhance the classroom environment, and efficient Haiku fans for air movement.
