Fun Friday : Lego high school

June 12th, 2015

We are loving this Lego model created by a fifth grader at Abiqua Academy in Salem, OR. There are great details captured in the detailed minature. (The t-rex fossil at the front entrance is one of our favorites.) The close educational community of Abiqua Academy has a passion and enthusiasm for this project that absolutely radiates through.

But there’s another reason this model is near and dear to our heart. Sometimes we describe building modular as “building with grown up Legos”. And what could be more appropriate? Modular doesn’t mean being forced into use of only boxes. Modular building means only that off-site fabrication is involved in the planning & realization of a vision.

Shingle SpringsInside of Fife Library

Modular construction is a type of construction – not a limitation and not an architectural style. Off-site fabrication can be coupled with any other building style – like this recent project for the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians that combines modular with a metal framed gymnasium (another form of off-site construction!) and a timbered roof overbuild completed at site. Or how about these gorgeous, exposed industrial supports and huge windows at Fife Library?

Like Legos, the only limit to modular construction is your imagination!

Tribe dedicates Education Center

July 28th, 2014

The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians blessed the new Education Center this weekend at an family-oriented barbeque hosted by Modern.

Kids played in the gymnasium and members mingled, celebrating in their new space & the opportunities it brings for the tribe’s future. The synergy of a steel fabricated building coupled with a modular structure creates a custom space solution that gives the Shingle Springs Band a quality facility with multi-use flexibility.

Modern considers it a privilege to have been a part of this project. Our sincere ‘thank you’ to the tribe, subcontractors and vendors who played a part in its success.

In case you missed it – watch the building site time lapse to see 4 months of sitework speed by in a minute & a half.

Manufacturer of the Year

June 19th, 2014

Modern was recently recognized by the Strategic Economic Development Corporation (SEDCOR) as Manufacturer of the Year at their annual luncheon.  Award presenter, George Jennings, read the following piece regarding Modern :

Manufacturer of the Year: Modern Building Systems

This award recognizes an outstanding manufacturer that is making world-class products, creating job opportunities and strengthening our communities. It is given to the individual or company who has been active in SEDCOR, made contributions to the industry and community and is considered a successful operator exemplifying the highest business ethical standards.

If you drive I-5 from Canada to Mexico you will always be within 30 minutes of a building constructed by Modern Building Systems.

Family-owned and operated, Modern Building Systems, Inc. is the longest continuously licensed modular building manufacturer on the West Coast. The company builds a wide variety of product encompassing healthcare, dental offices, retail, education, industrial, governmental, financial, religious, and office, including a state-of-the-art greyhound station at Safeco field in Seattle. Many of these buildings cannot be distinguished from traditional stick built buildings except that they can be ready for occupancy quicker.

Jim and Ken Rasmussen took over the reins of the company in the early 1990’s and through their leadership and innovation Modern has built several million square feet of buildings in the last 20 years, including approximately 350,000 square feet in 2013. The company employs 150 people in Aumsville.

Modern is one of 30 modular companies represented in the Modular Building Institute Hall of Fame and has been honored with dozens of national awards for their innovative and creative projects.

Modern has grown significantly in the last two decades – developing a leasing arm to their operations, establishing several sales offices along the West Coast & serving nationwide cooperative purchasing contracts. When many other modular manufacturers fell victim to the economic slowdown, Modern’s team held a strong market presence and kept employees on the production line – diversifying products, establishing a reputation for innovative problem solving, committing to Lean processes, and building LEED, sustainable structures. This culture of efficiency and stewardship has given Modern the opportunity to win a variety of environmentally-focused awards and accolades, including a Department of Energy grant to study energy consumption in modular classroom buildings and a company-wide EarthWise certification.

Modern’s owners, Jim and Ken Rasmussen, are involved in an array of business and civic organizations through the Willamette Valley – from student mentorships at Willamette University to Habitat for Humanity. The Modern staff follows this example, serving in a variety of business, charitable, and religious organizations – demonstrating their care not only in the buildings they design, engineer, and manufacture, but also in their service to the community.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without our people” – Ken Rasmussen

We, at Modern, are honored & humbled to be recognized  by our local community for the hard work of our staff. Thank you to all of our loyal customers, vendors, employees & allies that have made Modern’s history so rich. We value you & look forward to working with you in the future.
