Fun Friday : Lego high school

June 12th, 2015

We are loving this Lego model created by a fifth grader at Abiqua Academy in Salem, OR. There are great details captured in the detailed minature. (The t-rex fossil at the front entrance is one of our favorites.) The close educational community of Abiqua Academy has a passion and enthusiasm for this project that absolutely radiates through.

But there’s another reason this model is near and dear to our heart. Sometimes we describe building modular as “building with grown up Legos”. And what could be more appropriate? Modular doesn’t mean being forced into use of only boxes. Modular building means only that off-site fabrication is involved in the planning & realization of a vision.

Shingle SpringsInside of Fife Library

Modular construction is a type of construction – not a limitation and not an architectural style. Off-site fabrication can be coupled with any other building style – like this recent project for the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians that combines modular with a metal framed gymnasium (another form of off-site construction!) and a timbered roof overbuild completed at site. Or how about these gorgeous, exposed industrial supports and huge windows at Fife Library?

Like Legos, the only limit to modular construction is your imagination!

Tribe dedicates Education Center

July 28th, 2014

The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians blessed the new Education Center this weekend at an family-oriented barbeque hosted by Modern.

Kids played in the gymnasium and members mingled, celebrating in their new space & the opportunities it brings for the tribe’s future. The synergy of a steel fabricated building coupled with a modular structure creates a custom space solution that gives the Shingle Springs Band a quality facility with multi-use flexibility.

Modern considers it a privilege to have been a part of this project. Our sincere ‘thank you’ to the tribe, subcontractors and vendors who played a part in its success.

In case you missed it – watch the building site time lapse to see 4 months of sitework speed by in a minute & a half.

Congrats to one of our own!

Seattle School District modular classrooms

June 25th, 2012

It’s an exciting and busy week at Modern as we place 13 modular buildings – a mix of single and double classrooms – at 11 different sites throughout Seattle School District. The sites range from elementary to high school and present a variety of challenges for installation. Like many urban areas, Seattle’s schools are often located off busy thoroughfares and on properties with limited access.

This slideshow from West Seattle Herald shows one of the first buildings, being placed at Lafayette Elementary School. Transported to site in the middle of the night and navigated down a narrow alleyway, the building set requires strategic planning and the expertise of Modern’s staff.

If you have a similar challenge, contact us to see how we can assist in solving it. Modular construction can be completed in our factory at the same time site preparation takes place – saving time and money. Modern’s staff are creative problem solvers and bring decades of experience to answer your questions and create innovative solutions.

2012 Modular Awards

April 10th, 2012

Modular Building Institute – the commercial modular industry organization – recognized it’s leaders in design and technology last week at the annual awards presentation. Modern was honored to receive two prestigious acknowledgments this year.

Honorable mention in the category of Temporary Modular in Commercial Housing over 10,000 square feet was awarded to a recent student dormitory project completed for Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, CA.

Situated on the beautiful campus of one of the country’s most prestigious preparatory schools, these temporary student housing facilities needed to blend with the architecture of the existing campus. Built to withstand the wear and tear of continuous use from their residents, these lovely structures prove temporary modular solutions can be provide quality and aestics within the efficient modular timeline.

First place in Temporary: single-wide: any square footage was awarded to a public restroom and operations office space created for the City of Salem, Oregon.

Located at the street edge in a bustling downtown and continuously in use at a rate of roughly 200 people per hour, the modular restroom & office space provided by Modern created a solution to an urgent problem faced by the city. With the current building suffering from severe structural and safety issues, the transit system needed a solution and they needed one fast. Utilization of quality products to withstand abuse from frequent use, reduce the possibility of disease transmission and increase the building’s energy efficiency – combine to create a modular solution that went beyond meeting the need of a physical space.

Both the Steven School dorms and the Salem Transit facilities reflect Modern’s commitment to sustainable building practices. Recycled products, local purchasing and innovative energy efficient technologies are involved in both projects. Temporary modular buildings built with an environmental consciousness can make an impact on our footprint.
