How Metal Buildings Deliver Long Term Value To Schools

November 3rd, 2014

Did you know that Modern is also a Star Building Systems metal building representative? A combination of modular and other off-site construction methods, like metal building, can result in a great facility with maximum flexibility and a quick fabrication & installation. As your design-build company, we can turn your dream into reality using off-site construction applications that make the most sense for your use.

From Star Building Systems’ white paper – How Metal Buildings Can Deliver Long-Term Value To Schools

“An inherent requirement of any modern school building is that it be able to resist an enormous amount of daily wear and tear while retaining its functional integrity and aesthetic appeal for many years.”

For more information about how metal buildings deliver long term value to meet the challenges of increasing enrollment & narrowing education construction budgets, check out the source of this great infographic by downloading Star’s white paper here.

A Modern project that utilizes multiple types of off-site construction in synergy, the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indian’s new education center features a metal framed gymnasium seamlessly linked to a modular academic space. A great selection of practical sustainable features can be found in this project. And you can watch it go up in a minute & a half.

Women In Construction

August 26th, 2014

Recognized in 1971 as Women’s Equality Day to honor the 1920’s legislation securing women’s right to vote, August 26th is a great day to celebrate women in construction.

Many male dominated careers have a reputation for being a difficult place for women to find a voice. Today Modern celebrates our female team members and the valuable skills they bring to the table in their roles as trades, drafting, sales, financial, purchasing & office staff.

July 25th, 2014

At Modern, our excitement is growing for these brightly colored – but green focused – modular classrooms currently in production.

As concern for the environment & our human footprint grows, school districts are increasingly looking for green technologies & Earth conscious finishes. These modular classrooms for Edmonds School District are feature rich & we can’t wait to see students occupying these bright spaces!

From dirt to Education Center in 4 months

July 15th, 2014

The Shingle Springs band of Miwok Indians dreamed of a safe place for students. Throughout planning the vision morphed & grew to include a steel framed gymnasium & adjoining modular building. The final product is a great example of modular construction’s synergy with other construction methods. Using a variety of off-site construction methods combined with Modern’s project management meant time & cost savings for the tribe.

Modular doesn’t mean only building in boxes. It’s thinking outside of them.

Fresh face for Greyhound Seattle

July 8th, 2014

As bus giant Greyhound updates facilities to capture a new and expanding market, they turned to Modern to build a modular station for the City of Seattle, WA.

According to a recent piece in The Seattle Times,

In this, Greyhound’s 100th year in business, the company continues to put a new shine on the old dog with leather seats, Wi-Fi and a growing focus on shorter, nonstop routes. ….

Greyhound also has refurbished about three-fourths of its terminals nationwide and is looking at developing apps to make ticket purchases easier and more manageable.

In May, Greyhound moved from its Seattle bus station at Eighth Avenue and Stewart Street into a new station in Sodo, at 503 S. Royal Brougham Way, just east of Safeco and CenturyLink fields. The old building, built in 1927, had been sold in 1995 to developer R.C. Hedreen, who wants to build a convention hotel.

“The reason why all these new competitors like Megabus are coming in is inner-city lines are starting to attract a pretty broad base of riders back,” Leach said. “If you think about everything that’s happening, how can you not be excited about the future?

Did you notice that there’s no mention that the new Seattle station is modular? That’s probably because the lovely glass and concrete finishes of this building aren’t what people typically associate with modular construction – but reflect only a fraction of what is possible with a factory-built application.

Think your project can’t benefit from off-site construction? Think again.

EarthWISE Recertification 2013

June 26th, 2013

Modern recert 2013 EW ad

We are excited to announce that Modern was recently recertified as EarthWISE for another three year term, which is an honor only bestowed on those that the EarthWISE committee feel are making exemplary efforts towards environmentally conscious business practices.
We owe a special “thank you” to Dedrea Vaubel, our electrical supervisor, who spearheaded a lighting retrofit for our entire manufacturing facility – which integrates occupancy sensors & updated fixtures. Working with Energy Trust of Oregon, we discovered that this project alone will have an 83% energy saving over our former lighting. According to Energy Trust that is equal to : 8 tons of CO2 generated fossil fuels / 1 car off the road / 1.3 acres of reforested trees!

The Beauty Of Hard Work

April 1st, 2013

At Modern we treasure the relationships that we have with our customers. In our 41 years in business we have had many clients become friends with our staff.

Clock In Progress

We will forever treasure this clock, handcrafted by former Marion County School District Facilities Director, Bill Key. Ten years ago, upon his retirement, Bill mentioned that he had always wanted to create a grandfather clock. We challenged him to do just that.

We’re so grateful to Bill Key (and Mrs. Key, the self proclaimed ‘clock widow’) for this lovely addition to our front lobby. Thank you again for your beautiful work!
